At its core, the upgrades project consisted of four key elements: establishing a robust Fiber Optic Cable (FOC) backbone to connect a Main Computer Room (MCR) with multiple Telecommunication Rooms (TRs) across the campus, upgrading existing utility systems to handle increased electrical loads, ensuring proper environmental conditioning for mission-critical operations, and ultimately enhancing the hospital’s IT infrastructure to support the modernized records system.
Initially, the VA’s plan called for consolidating four separate campus server rooms into a single MCR within Room 234 of Building 1. However, as BAE developed the 35% Schematic Design drawings and conducted a structural impact study, significant challenges emerged. Renovating Room 234 for use as the new MCR proved highly impractical—the process would require temporarily relocating critical data racks and equipment, potentially disrupting hospital operations. Additionally, given that Room 234 was directly above the hospital’s main entrance so would significantly impact hospital operations.
Recognizing these challenges, the VA revised its approach and directed BAE to pursue a modified plan. While the core elements of the project remained intact—expanding the FOC backbone, establishing new TRs, and implementing campus-wide electrical and mechanical upgrades—the new plan introduced a key change: the creation of a standalone Data Center Addition (DCA). This new building would house the MCR, consolidating the functions of the four existing server rooms into a state-of-the art facility.
